Typical of California informality, Sacramento is referred to by many names. The most prevalent are: Capital City, River City (due to the two major rivers which run through the city), and the City of Trees. However, the nickname most used by those living in the area is simply Sacto, Sactown or Sac. This is evident when residents refer to areas and landmarks by this name. Old Sac is the original town of Sacramento which to this day is maintained. The Big Tomato, Sacratomato, and Sack O' Tomatoes continue to be used despite the ongoing triumph of tract houses over tomato fields, perhaps in reference to the perceived pastorality of Sacramento in comparison to denser cities such as San Francisco and Los Angeles. City of Sacramento to Issue “Spare the Water Alert” During Summer Heat Waves
Sacramento, Calif. – The City of Sacramento Department of Utilities today announced their plans to issue a “Spare the Water Alert” during projected heat waves, urging customers to cut back non-essential water use to both conserve water and energy.
“When temperatures reach their peak, demand for water stretches the City’s treatment and pumping abilities, making it difficult to refill storage supplies overnight,” said Department of Utilities Director and Assistant City Manager Marty Hanneman. “Refilling these supplies is critical to running the distribution system efficiently, having enough water pressure and retaining adequate reserves for fire emergencies.”
In addition, energy costs for treating and pumping water to homes are typically most expensive during peak temperatures, especially during late afternoon when electricity demand is high. This means higher energy costs for the City, and can mean higher water and energy bills for customers.

City, Partners Submit Prop. 1C Applications Totaling $112 Million for Projects Within the City Stimulus Monies will Generate New Jobs, Create Affordable Housing
Sacramento, Calif. – In an effort to further jump start the local Sacramento economy, the City of Sacramento, in conjunction with other agency partners and area developers, today submitted applications – totaling more than $112 million – to the State of California’s Proposition 1C (Prop. 1C) Infill and Transit Oriented Development Housing Programs. These applications for eight new mixed-use and transit-oriented development projects will provide a needed boost to the local economy, will create sustainable transit-friendly development envisioned in the City’s recently adopted 2030General Plan and the SACOG’s Blueprint, and support housing development for low-income families. The City will continue to aggressively seek State and Federal funding to bring development projects and jobs to Sacramento.
"Putting Sacramento back to work and spurring economic development is our top priority, and securing these funds will go a long way to making that happen," said Mayor Kevin Johnson. "This is a proactive step towards investing in infrastructure to help create a successful future for Sacramento.”
Expected to be awarded by June 30, project applicants for the second round of Prop1C will create vibrant new mixed income communities with a range of housing prices and affordable rents. Specific projects that could receive the grant funding include: The Railyards; Township 9; Station 65; Crystal Ice Blocks; Capitol Lofts; La Valentina; Curtis Park Village; and the 7th & H Street project.
