Typical of California informality, Sacramento is referred to by many names. The most prevalent are: Capital City, River City (due to the two major rivers which run through the city), and the City of Trees. However, the nickname most used by those living in the area is simply Sacto, Sactown or Sac. This is evident when residents refer to areas and landmarks by this name. Old Sac is the original town of Sacramento which to this day is maintained. The Big Tomato, Sacratomato, and Sack O' Tomatoes continue to be used despite the ongoing triumph of tract houses over tomato fields, perhaps in reference to the perceived pastorality of Sacramento in comparison to denser cities such as San Francisco and Los Angeles. CITY OF SACRAMENTO ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR FALL 2008 PLANNING ACADEMY BEGINNING JULY 1
Free academy gives city residents and businesses an inside look of city planning process
Sacramento, Calif. – In an effort to educate and engage Sacramento residents, businesses and community leaders in the City’s planning process, the City of Sacramento Planning Department is accepting applications for its Fall 2008 Planning Academy, beginning July 1. The free, 10-week course covers a broad spectrum of planning and development-related topics and issues, primarily focusing on the City’s Smart Growth principles.
"The Planning Academy gives Sacramento citizens an ‘insider's’ look at the City's 2030 General Plan, tools necessary to support the new vision for infill and smart growth, plus they can discover the elements of successful development," said Carol Shearly, the City's Planning Director. “Through the academy, our graduates become more informed and involved in the planning process, and many have gone on to become strong community advocates, and even serve on City Council and commissions.”
More than 250 Sacramento citizens, business owners, and community leaders have graduated from the Planning Academy since its inception in 2002. Other topics include the City’s General Plan Update, affordable housing and infill development, the development review process, sustainability, economic development, and other planning issues. |
